Winston

Fall 2003 Newsletter

Meet Winston - bought as a novelty pet for the children to play with but he wasn't house trained so he lived in a cage with barely enough room to turn around. Their dogs all went to the shelter. Now he must go. What were they thinking???

Today Winston frolics in the house, happy-go-lucky without a care in the world.

Winston's friend Charlie the dog

Charlie and his brothers and sisters were orphaned at 6 days of age. They were then cared for in a loving foster home before coming to the sanctuary to be adopted into lifetime homes.

When we first met Charlie we knew he had to stay. Charlie loves pigs, and Winston the piglet and Charlie the puppy played together, slept together and would have eaten together except Winston is a pig and therefore obsessed with food.

As Charlie grew he left his piglet friend to hang out with the big dogs and Winston soon bonded with piglets Lola and Pickles.

Yet.. every once in a while the two of them will leave everyone else and snuggle tight together just like best friends who are old dear friends.

Winston's friend Pickles

Who would give a 77 year old woman a piglet for a Christmas present??

Certainly not someone who thought about what was best for the piglet or the amount of work involved with taking care of a small, young animal.

Pickles' short life was spent living alone in a small cemented area behind a house. She was too much work for the older woman and clearly not the easy house pet she wanted. Pickles was shy and timid when she first came to the sanctuary.

We immediately had her live in the house among people and animals for the first few weeks to help calm her fears. She quickly became the inquisitive , friendly girl we now know.

Once she was out and about among the other pigs she became a steadfast friend to piglet Winston. Now if you see Pickles you will see Winston as she never leaves his side. Her lonely, isolated start in life is now only a memory. Where would she be without our help?
